It's Time to Shop Small, Canada

New campaign reinforces American Express' commitment to small business by encouraging Cardmembers to support small merchants

TORONTO, Nov. 15, 2018 /CNW/ - American Express is encouraging Cardmembers to Shop Small with the launch of its latest campaign in support of Canadian small business. As part of the ongoing Shop Small program, the campaign brings Cardmembers closer to the small businesses they already love and helps them discover new independent businesses in their communities.

First launched in 2013, the Shop Small program continues its efforts to bring value to small merchants and Cardmembers. The program is part of American Express' strategic approach to supporting Canadian small businesses and broadening acceptance, and it's seeing results. In 2017, over 70,000 additional small businesses started to accept American Express Cards.*

"At American Express, we've been focused on growing acceptance in the small business segment and with the help of programs like Shop Small, we're seeing very strong results," said Kerri-Ann Santaguida, Vice President and General Manager, Global Merchant and Network Services, American Express Canada. "We're excited for this year's campaign to bring Cardmembers and small businesses together as part of our ongoing commitment to supporting small business."

After the success of last year's Toronto-focused campaign, Shop Small has expanded to support even more small businesses and Cardmembers. This is the first nation-wide Shop Small campaign, with a focus on four key markets: Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary and Montreal.

Cardmembers can support small businesses in the categories of shopping, eating and drinking, with an American Express offer that gives a $5 statement credit when they spend $5 at a participating small merchant, up to $25 in statement credits when they shop up to 5 times at different participating locations with their American Express Card during the offer period. Cardmembers can visit the American Express Maps to learn about the over 25,000 participating merchants.

The marketing campaign uses a multi-channel communications approach to inform Cardmembers of the spend $5, get $5 offer, including email, banner ads, in-app notifications, social media content and partnerships with Toronto influencers.

The campaign also includes a merchant communications element to educate participating small merchants about the campaign and provide them with the tools to promote the campaign in-store such as point-of-purchase signage and Shop Small branded sandwich boards.

The current Shop Small campaign runs from October 15 until November 30.
